For the old-timers and us 'has-beens'. If you think pukes are over- powered now
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A old log from August 1996, starring lotsa old people. Coming back from a 2
month summer vacation just to check out cash and age. Little did I know that
darkies were on the doorsteps preparing a raid. It ends with Mrsh and Prowler
being executed and torn apart by some dispel evil machinegun-fire up against
the already bloodstenched brickwalls of Rivendell.
Okay, Elrond does some serious whopping too.

A overpowered puke in a overpowered city with a overpowered staff. Too easy.

And the norrlenning-swedes shows skills worthy a czech.

I dont remember what client I used back then - it doesnt show all my inputs.

I wish I had killed Liten and Belal solo, but Im afraid it must have been some
overkill together with my lab back then (Elegil, Haleth, Feor etc).

The Balrog thing is real. It was the first Balrog-slayer party led by Huor.
In the beginning Balrog parties wasnt limited to 7 since there was no fire-
rings and shite. Wasnt necessarily easier tho.

I had never realised how new most of the current MUME population is before reading the comments to this log.

Asanda and Glader: getting 1, 0% things on trophy is new. Previously you would always get 1, 1% from your first kill, no matter how much you were involved.

And gleaming belts are really really new! I got to know since I described these!

Oh, and *comf Prowler and Mrsh*. I think I got lucky that day and my orc missed that raid.

And to all the unknown people who complain the old days were better - I can see why you may want the code rolled back, but trust me you do not want all the cool things created since then undone.
grunge2000-10-23 18:59:14
One of my first humorous experiences with pkdeath was having been slain (as grunge as level 21)
and then praying to rivendell. I was standing at the fountain (in the dark) and there was heavy fog.
Someone came into the room and I asked them if they had a light.
They proceeded to mount me.
Then after some short talk, I was smote dead in 2 rounds. I later found out that
this was Slayer.
In retrospect, Mume was alot more fun in those days that you could do almost anything. Now, according to
many veterans, it is babymud.
Unfortunately, many players that tweaked the boundaries and made mume fun are gone, Gangee, Dreadnaught...
Hurin2000-10-23 20:15:43
I remember killing pukes with lotsa rivendell receipts, then acually going into
rivendell and giving them to angdil, and he would give out whatever was
receipted! Grauss always loved sneaking around in Rivendell, backstabbing unaware players! Fun Fun!!

Juston2000-10-23 20:56:47
Elrond screams "PROTECT THE INNOCENT! BANZAI! CHARGE!" is just old DikuMUD code stock- all cityguards scream that in the other muds.
Moonglum2000-10-23 21:10:05
I have played since 1994ish. My first character was *an Orc* named Vale. Back then, MUME was huge amounts of fun. The game has more features now for sure, but is much less fun to play.

MUME needs to have some more creative things added. There was once talk of allowing high level BNs to become Ringwraiths in order to spice up the game. Ringwraiths would have the 'real death' flag of course, and only, was it 9?, could be in existance at any given time, etc. Maybe limit it to 3, whatever.

I think some work on Tharbad could really crank up the racewars. Allow the city to be captured by darkies or whities (like dark tower, etc.) Taking the city over would be very hard of course, but imagine the fun. Once captured by darkies for instance, specific darkie mobs would begin to migrate toward Tharbad to take up residence. Vanquished whitie mobs would repop in 'safer' lands to the north - only to return when the city was reclaimed. In order for, let's say, some orc rent-mob to establish itself in the captured city, *an Orc* involved in the capture would have to visit mob in, say, OOC and inform him of the capture of Tharbad. The mob would then being its journey to Tharbad, with *orcs* in tow maybe. You get the idea.

These are just some off-the-cuff ideas ... I'm sure many more can be devised and possibly implemented if we just make the effort.
Zoone2000-10-23 21:12:27

Swork2000-10-23 21:45:55
We all know that whatever we would dream about, they will never implement it, they just try to balance the game. And as they downgrade some class/race/skill, they succeed in balancing some part of the game, but also, some cool players leave after the change. Can't bring up any examples, but you all can think of many I guess. About new zones, I believe Namo was testing some zone lately with different classes, so lets hope they open some soonish. I guess immos just don't have anything else to do nowadays than to rewrite old zones, so players would have to map/learn them again.

Moonglum's idea is good, but it will never be imp'ed (at least not during our lifetime). I think if ppl would be more interested in building, we could have many new zones, but everyone just stands and whines around that there are no new zones. Why don't you log on your idlewhoring Maia and ask some Va for job. Another problem is that there seem to be too few active Va's, so the work is going slowly. Maybe promote some active Ms/Mw's to Va's (like Deor, I think he's been very active recently, catching cheaters (like me) and dealing with legendhomes. I'd say he would deserve it, although I don't like him too much myself.

So everyone get your immo online and lets build couple hundred new zones.

Moonglum2000-10-23 22:13:09
Juston ... this would be pretty easy to do I think. Allow some god to create one-time artifacts or something like that. You would petition that god to have your shinning breastplate modified in some fashion. It would be, EXPENSIVE, of course. The process would be similar to making a legend home - but it's equipment based. Paramaters would have to be set forth first though. Like a list of specific things that can be added to specific items at specific costs/quests. Hell, it could even be set up to happen via mobs, like herblore quests, etc. I submitted a similar idea a few years ago regarding mounts. A process for 'upgrading' your favorite mount and giving it added hps, abilities, a unique name (can't currently name found rohirrims), etc etc. I also suggested barding for mounts. Also, a process by which a BN could capture and 'corrupt' a rohorrim and turn it into some DarkHorse or some such creature. Puke mages should REALLY want that one ... cast 'locate life' DarkHorse ... or tack Darkhorse ... you get the idea. The DarkHorse could camp with its master of course. *grin*

Features to add to mounts ... waterwalk (huge maybe or very hard to get), extra hitpoints, extra defense, callmount from xzones away, 'flying' (eagle/beastlike limited use capability), who knows what else ... let our imagination run here.

Well, the best times for -any- game, mud or offline, is when you are first learning it. That's when the 'Holy shit!' effect happens the most. Every piece of gear you find is treasure, every mob you kill is exciting. But you do that 10 hours a day for 6 years, it's not going to be nearly as fun. The perception changes, now if things go well it's 'expected', and if things go poorly it makes you freak out. The best you can do is break even, and failure hurts more because you know it didn't -have- to happen.

The 'good old days' still exists, right now. I help newbies quite often, and I see it in them all the time: they excitement, the enthusiasm. Veterans don't have it because they squeezed mume dry of any possible play value, and all that's left for them is bitching endlessly in places like this. *wink*

Mume has been constantly improved by the management, and 99% of the time those improvements rocked. But no rate of zone building or game mechanic improvement can possibly feed the appetite of a person who plays every waking moment of their life here. In the end, it's just a game, and isn't supposed to be a substitute for your life.
Fredde to Vorli2000-10-23 23:00:25
WHO the hell plays 10h a day in 6 years?! that dude or girl really should sell his/hers computer.

and lets make Moonglum a Arata. he really should be the boss of this game. if manwe and co whants this mud to be more rpish, stop takeing away wps and stuff. do some changes like moonglums ideas. would make this game more fun.

would be fun to have an orcie rent dude in tbad with same hps as shady, or why not a troll rent mob

I believe a while back we could in fact customize our weapons to a certain
extent..like take away parry for more ob dmg etc...what ever happened to that
feature? I know we cant do that anymore..I'm just guessing that it was buggy..
because I know at the time it did a a few bugs here and there..I believe
your weapon might have changed back to original status when u rented...but how
hard is it to just go change it back..not to hard

Oscarmeyer2000-10-23 23:37:46
I love Moonglum's idea, though I doubt it would be imped. Maybe some 'new' city could be created instead, in some future zone. East of noc would be ideal, in the Beorning's lands, etc. I also liked (?)'s equipment idea. However, I would maybe make a minimum level requirement (say 30 or 40), and have the equipment be exactly the same except for a unique description. Anyone who took it in combat would have to identify it, else the 'real' item could be included in the description. Example:

"Aschit Bladebard is here, wielding a black runed dagger with a glowing symbol of a harp in the hilt."

Etc.

Actually Moria was Fror and Arion's brainchild I think, and Dore led the first
balrog group, though huor was probably in it, and you used to get 1, 1% on the
first kill of a mob or player no matter what the group size was. I don't
remember cadfael being in the first balrog group... but he might have been.

I know from past experience that you can run mume on a different port # My suggestion is set up 2 diff versions of mume. One with cool new ideas like moonglum (or oldschool way) on it (have a complete char wipe on that port tho so that every1 starts with there character at level 1. Then have the current mume running on the current port number. That way the players of mume will be the deciders of wich mume fits there personality and they can play it.

Juston Gustave the Second is wearing:
Engraved broadsword (Deathblow) <-- My name for sword
Large Metal Wall Shield with a picture of a knight running
<- (an engraving)
Great Helm (Protectorate) <- (More absorb, more off on db)
Thick Metal Breastplate
The Gustave Family's Coat of Arms
A band of leather <- (my idea for trolls, the ability to take piece of crap, not fitting, ragged piece of armor , rip it and make it into a wristband)
Heavy elven greaves ('nother idea o' mine, Eq should have in the name whether it's fashioned from an orc blacksmith, human, elf, dwarf, etc. penalities are switched about a bit, if you got piece of eq cause it was on ground it would be "plain")
Amenddum: Give trolls a guy, named Gormist or something, who woudl do this to a piece of eq that a troll already fitted.

Gormist tells you 'Bah give me that piece of shit softskin! 'Twas forged by the weakling hands of (insert other race)! They don't know how to fashion armour!'

Human forged eq (charactized by it's perfect symetry): One more damage point absorbtion (i.e. Thick metal breastplate now doesn't absorb 93% of 13 damage but 90% percent of 14 damage with a one ob penalty)
Hobbit forged eq (characterized by tiny dents where a hammer hit) : more db
Elf forged eq (characterized by it's heavenly aroma): more hp regen
Half-Elf forged eq (characterized by a holy aura): more mana regen
Dwarf forged eq (characterized by the metal thickness): less ob, more pb
Troll forged eq (characterized by bands of leather): less absorb more ob
Orc forged eq (characterized by the smell of elf blood): less db and ob, far more pb
Black Numenorean forged eq (characterized by shades of the wilderness): more move regen

One more thing: make thieves, since they obviously took a beating with the sneak change and stuff, two new pieces of eq- a better cap and a better pair of gloves

If a 'mirror' mume was going to be set up, my idea for it would be to change just one thing: make any death real-death. Not sure if it would work out, but it would definitely be a different feel. Probably result in waaaaay too much bitching in the end, though. I mean, look how freaked out people get now when they die, can you imagine it if it was all real death? Newbie zones would have to have a faster repop rate, too, as they'd be a lot more crowded. *wink*

When I started to play Orc, cave was located just south from bushes on OER.
There was this Hunter just out side the cave that was butcher all the time
because he had a wall shield. Anyone remember the year they moved old old
orc cave to OOC?
Unknown2000-10-24 12:06:08
perhaps they can make the new zones in the south (around H & E) into battlefield zones, where huge mob groups fight eachother and which you can join as some kind of hero/legend dude, moving the pk more to that region.
i dunno if they were already planning that.

*nod* to boing. i know couple of M who have been waiting for 1.5 yrs for a job...
Ainagul2000-10-24 14:08:54
I think there is 1 more thing that would help the game. I dont know how to imp it, but if it was easier to die (e.g even if you are maxeq, bunch of twisteds, bunch of scrolls and never leave home without followers), the game would be more fun.

My logic goes this way: I will die sooner or later (lets say a month) -> i better enjoy eq etc as long as i can and take more risks and do crazy stuff.

When people do banzai things, the game is usally more fun. When it is spam-xp-eq-hoarding it is kinda boreing. I think during the'ol'days there were more bugs, more linkfarts, more unbalanced features etc, so even if you were burst-brownnose-flee-if-hurt, you still got buried in some fight. There is no idea to be careful and spam-level, if you know, that some silly feature will rip you soon anyway.

I know most dont agree to my logic, but what the hell.
Roadkill2000-10-25 20:46:01
I am one of those that think MUME used to be more fun in the old days. For one
thing, I think it was simpler and therefore you could play it with some success
and have fun without having to be permaonline. Nowadays, things are getting so
complicated that if you want to have everything (scrolls, rocks, herblores,
herbs, artifacts, very rare items etc) you have to play -lots- and put a lot of
time into getting eq and other stuff.

Now you'll just say that we could play without all the stuff then, if it bothers
us so much, but that doesn't work. You can't play without all this stuff against
someone who -has- all the stuff (like Elestir, for example) because you'll lose
all the time. And then you don't have fun.

So the solution is this, as I see it:

1) You could downgrade all the extras (again, as it was done a couple of years
ago), making someone who has everything less invincible.

2) You could just make the mud simpler - cut a little bit back on all the
spammy features; stick to the basics and refine those, and make new zones
WITHOUT adding an extra piece of equipment you know everyone will have to have.

3) Put all changes into news. It isn't fair that there are several useful
herblores around that nobody knows about outside a small group of gods (and
their mortals and their mortal friends), or equipment nobody knows about except
a few privileged ones, or features that have changed that never make into news
until someone dies or worse, then complains only to hear 'it changed ages ago',
ask why it wasn't put on news and get silence as answer.

(Btw the example about herblores is real. Someone told me today that there are
several herblores in the game that most people don't know about.)
Roadkill again.2000-10-25 20:53:24
Oh, and I think the ideas about personalized items and level limits on items
suck. Sorry guys, and nothing personal.

Here's why: Personalized items will only add to the eqwhoring and make-the-most-
of-everything-ratrace; imagine what people like Elestir will do when given the
chance to have even greater defence. And it would complicate the game to no end.
Bad idea, imho.

The other idea about level limits is just too diku for my taste. I played a few
muds with level-limit items before I started MUME, and as a whole the level-
limits only served to cut back on any realistic feel you got while playing that
mud. Items should just be less powerful than levels. So a level 4 char should
lose against a level 10 char every time (unless he rocks and the other one
sucks), and a level 20 should have a hard time against a level 26. Make eq too
powerful, and you have a problem on your hands (sort of like things were when
people could wear both iron and ruby rings at the same time, and the rings were
+10 db and +10 ob).

And to add to the above comment about how important changes never make it into
news: How many of you learned about how to make sapphire rings and phials by
reading news? Everyone I know on the mud either knew it because they had a god,
or learned about it from someone who had a god etc. I don't think it ever got
into the news. And I would say that sapphire rings are important, wouldn't you?

Some very good points in there Roadkill. I hardly have time at all to play the game these days which is why i play troll usually when i do have that time. It just takes way too much time to get all the crap you need to be able to fight effectively, which is time that I just don't have to spare. Even trolls are getting more equipment intensive since the change to unarmed ob, which i think is really bad, they should be the one race that doesn't need to worry about that crap with all their malices :-)

One idea is to remove the enchant weapon spell and change all non-magic
weapons so that their stats are as if they were max-enchanted. As long as
you have a decent weapon, ya can allways fight, and enchanted weapons arent
that bad.

Some nice points and I completely agree with most of it, but
we are assuming MUME management gives a shit what we think or want
to see in the game, which they don't and very rarely ever have.
They have said many times, 'its our mud, if you dont like it leave'.
Imagine if everyone left how fun it would be for em. In any case, *my*
point is your not the first to bitch about things like that or try
to light a fire under managements ass, and its never changed what they
do or how they go about things one iota. And the attitudes of players
and how they play (ruthless hugegroup/traps etc) is only a direct result
of the piss poor management on this game. Suggestion? Join em or quit.
Stretch the boundries, become just as ruthless or quit. Its never going
to change until the V's wake up, and they are often as arrogant and
negative as the players are.
