We were killing bear at sod when you blocked turf/sod. Me and whity decided to go in and get ppl to backtrap. We got Ellara and Dorfl, Ginlon came too, so we were 5. They were supposed to enter insta when darkies enter overseer area, and we wouldv won. Then insta when darkies enter my link fucks up, i lose link, they kill me linkless. I spam back, whity died too finally, next sunrise we enter (I brough overseer key, nobody remembered to take it), they die, I have to BEG to get my own eq back, and some ppl walked away with cpl fullsets, I didn't get anything for organizing this shit. This shit really blows. Should'v never let pandion in, we broke and let him in and reblocked when he arrived... sheesh... what a waste of eq.

Well, as I already mailed to some ppl who participated I was somehow
disappointed by the information flow from the outside to the inside
after Engelbert died. Aparently some of those outside didnt even
REALIZE I was inside and still alive. While I was sneaking about
overseer fleeing from those 4 darkies the exit was open TWICE,
and both times I thought "Ah, Rescued! NOW comes the attack!".
First time only Ginlon showed up and was nearly wasted by them
and next time not even ONE came in, although I had told somebody
that it was easy kills if those 3 outside would come in.

Moreover: Why cant ppl see that its hard to organize a
group of the RIGHT size. If you narrate for help, you
get none or too many, but hardly the correct size. And
hardly ever anybody has the time or the nerves to evaluate
the situation before the actual attack. Who is there gets
grouped, you are lucky if you get the info what to expect
AT ALL. Perhaps its different in labs, dunno, dont care.

Overall it was 40 exciting minutes (24 ticks inside after block + 16 or
so ticks of fleeing around from those 4). Alas the 30min after my personal
rip were something I never want to experience again. I had to make a fool
out of myself (narrating, telling, whining, cursing etc.) to get my eq back.
Very very very embarassing. I DID get my eq back, at least the stuff worth
the trouble...(not quite sure it was REALLY worth the trouble...*SIGH*).

Pray, Orcobal, one more question: Why didnt you kill the aggro mobs before
goin after me????? You would have gained quite some time of thinking and
organizing resistance. I saw later that Vridush and other dreadful were
heading there as well...perhaps if they had started earlier...

There hasn't been a general in history that didn't try to make sure to get into an advantageous position (trap) with many more troops (overkill) than the enemy. All this 'overkill' crap boils down to: my ego was hurt because I died, and someone needs to suffer for that.

Vorlin you must not know yer history very well. A long series of Roman imperators during the republic were famous for fighting severly undermanned and outgunned.
Quintus Fabius Maximus Cunctator, Lucius Cornelius Scipo Africanus, his adoptive son Aemilianus, Lucius Aemilius Paullus, Gaius Marius, Lucius Cornelius Sulla, and most notably Gaius Julius Ceasar Pontifex Maximus all fought against horrible odds .... and won.
And thats ony illustrating a few men from one country... History is filled with great combat upsets.

And btw, I don't think all this "overkill" crap, as you put, it boils down to egos being hurt when people die. I never die to overkill traps because they are incredibly easy to avoid. Niccolo, you misread what I said. I didn't say fights never took place where an army attacked (or won) when outmanned. I said noone ever did it on purpose. You find me an example where a general in history told a significant portion of his troops to leave the field so the enemy would have a fairer fight, or when a general purposefully gave up advantageous terrain. An example, that is, where said general wasn't later decided to be a total fuckup.

And Stormblast, exactly what to propose should be done? A 30 minute chat session before each fight to determine what is and isn't going to be fair for that particular match? "You have 3 ologs, so we get stored fireball!" "No, no stored fireball, our ologs are naked, you only get stored sprays" "Okay, stored sprays, but no bashing!" "What, we gotta bash, how about only bash every 5th round" On, and on and on, yadda yadda yadda. And even -then- someone would bitch endlessly later that either someone violated the agreed on rules or that the rules agreed to were 'unfair'.

Caesar and Marius disdained large armies, Vorlin. They preferred smaller mobile forces because they were easier to train, maneuver, and supply. 1 example you want tho fine... before the battle of Pharsalus, an already outnumbered Caesar (by a 2-1 margin) sent 2 of his legions to reinforce Illiycrum (sp). Caesar then stole a march on Pompeius and arrived at Pharsalus well ahead of Magnus.
Rather than taking the high ground (as one who first arrives on a battlefield might) he took the tactically disadvantageous low ground in order to give Pompeius false confidence and induce an attack. If you have studied miltary history you would notice that the best generals from any era, not just ancient history, have usually preferred small mobile forces and have often dispositioned their forces in such a way as to lose tactical superiority but to gain certain intangible psychological advantages.

If you want to argue in favor of the "fun" of mume overkill, by all means do so,
but try to find arguments other than historical anecdotes lest you look like an idiot.

Ceasar chose the ground in order to induce an attack, quite true, but his victory
over Pompeius at Pharsalus was due to his reserve of heavy infantry on his exposed
flank. He knew that Pompeius would attack with his preponderance of cavalry on that
flank (can you say trap?) and so had planned to use a superior weapon system (heavy
infantry)to defeat first Pompeius' cavalry and then his light infantry.
Although I agree with most of you thesis, I believe that Ceasar's victory was through
superior articulation and weapon system, not any psychological advantage.

As a small point of order, I must say that spamming the narr channel with your immortal
after your mortal character dies and then typographically abusing those who ask you to
please stop is quite poor sporting and shows a serious lack of maturity. I hope that
the player of Orcobal (a player for whom I have had respect) will, in future, consider
the ramifications of his actions and the damage he might do to his reputation before
deciding to embark on this path again.

And, I believe also that Rober E. Lee's victory at Chancellorsville (where Lee's troops
left their entrenched mountainous positon to meet his enemy's flank march in the wilderness)
is a better example of giving up terrain, fighting a numerically superior foe and emerging
victorious.

Ceasar didn't have a reserve of heavy infantry (he had no reserves at all because he was so outnumbered he had to stretch his line thin to prevent being outflanked). What yer referring to is when Pompeius horse charged Ceaser's right wing comprised of his German cavalry. The Germans peeled back and the 14th legion (using seige spears ala Braveheart) suddenly stepped forward and won that part of the field. The victory may not have been entirely due to psychological advantage but I think it played a very large part. Well that and the fact that Caesar's troops were
10 year veterans and Pompeius were mostly green. :)
