To where did the roleplay and fun of MUME go?
Greetings, people of Arda.

The day before yesterday, I saddled my pack horse and went
on a trip from the Great Dwarven Mountains of the west and
through the beautiful landscape of Arda to the lovely
Rivendell.

On my way, I was admirering the work of the Ainu - the world
they have created for us to inhabit, the many details, the
fun and dangers they have made for us, so that we can enjoy
ourselves while living on Arda.

I came to think that so few people appreciate the work and
that Arda has become spoiled and ruined by the whining of
children that think they are warriors and greedy mercenaries.

I came to think of why I came to Arda. I came to enjoy the
people and to win renown also - to fight for what I believe
is good - but in a way that was enjoyable and with friends.
Not in a way where every step one would take in the fields
or on the road would echo of narrates of hate, whining and
begging - not to mention accusations of all kinds.

Therefore, I have taken my last ride through Arda. And that
ride did not encourage me to stay. Of the many good folks I
have known, most are gone. Those that are left, I hope will
influence this magnificent world in a good way - and turn
the state of which Arda is in now into something that's as
enjoyable as it once were.

My accomplishments are not great, but the experiences that
I have had cannot be measured in gold or in trophies.

I wish you all well journeys and most of all, wonderful and
enjoyable experiences.

players come and go as they have always done but we need more roleplay for sure and much less whining
Malak/Alweon2000-12-04 02:53:04
I would like the idea of an rp channel. Still keep narrates as a channel but make it an ooc channel. And allow only one narrate/tick, but as many rp channel shouts as you want. Of course on the rp channel, you must act like an orc, troll, black numenorean, dwarf, elf, man, hobbit, or half elf... To carry the idea further make the rp channels same race only. Ie, dwarves hear dwarves, hobbits hear hobbits, men hear men and half-elves, elves hear elves and half-elves, half-elves hear half-elves, men and elves, trolls hear trolls and bns, orcs hear orcs and bns, and bns hear all on the dark side... Just an idea...
Tempest2000-12-04 03:02:14
Why would BNs hear more narrates on their side then say men or elves would on their side? That doesn't make any sense.
Alweon2000-12-04 03:25:50
Plan detailed on latest log from me. Ask that question there, and I shall respond when asked.
Treastin2000-12-04 07:17:41
I hate to see you go seeing that you are the spark that i have been seeking for so long. Why can't we have people who play for the pure joy of it, where whining has snuffed out like the OLD candle it has become? Where is role-playing at least 10% of the time istead of acting like modern agers in a fanasty setting. I mean for real, why do people play this game to waste hours of their life B*itching about lag. No I see it as an oppurtunity to wisk away from the annoyances of the real world and trasport themselves to a new world where they can be someone else. Perhaps we should stop poisoning these newbie by telling them to "shut the hell up" (not mentioning names). Perhaps this bitterness of new players is becuase of are lack of helping hands. I hope one day MUME will be a fun place again. I do not plan on quiting seeing that would defeat the pupose of this message. I wish you all good luck take my opinion as you will....
Shaw2000-12-04 08:15:34
MUME will change as the players change. As in all things, change is good.
I expect that there will be a new breed of players who deal with the rules
and circumstances as they can, and in the end, they will bring about a new
order. You all must understand that memories of the past, although pleasant,
are fleeting and every day brings new challenges. It is up to you whether to
deal w/the challenges or forego the adventures required in the new environment.
We all recall fondly the lost days, but the new days bring a renewed hope and
in the end... it is what YOU bring to the game that makes it fun.
In essance, it has never been about the rules, it has always always been about
the players. And if you open up to the new players, you might be suprised by the
decency and honor they bring to the game.
Leave, if you must, but I think that more reward would be had by attempting to
shape the new environment by your presence. I don't know you, but from the other
postings here, I see that you are an admired player. I ask you to take up the
challenge of the new day. If you cannot, I will mourn you passing.
Fredde2000-12-04 08:40:14
jaha?
To Shaw2000-12-04 08:42:32
You must be new too or you would see some of the ignorance in your
comments. First off I wanna know who all these players with decency and
honor are. Ive been playing for 5 years and being an older player (33)
I've come across maybe 10 people in that 5 years that actually struck me as
mature, honorable and helpful in the game environment. I agree, change is
stability (an aphorism), but many better players have tried to 'shape the
new environment by' they're 'presence' and been turned away by a condesending
imm or turned off by a level 50+ dork acting like he's Gods gift to Tolkien
(we all know who those players are...no need for names). When I first came here
and saw such behavior my first reaction was, why arent these people
playing the dark side? It would fit they're rp way better...then I realized
half these kids have no clue what rp is. Kinda sad really. When you
read the books it would be great to be a part of that world, and when
someone comes along and recreates it, do they play the part? Sure ...of a
5th grade drama king/queen. Bottom line: Anyone can become a legend. ANYONE.
ANYONE can hit level 40. Level 50. Should we admire these people because
they wasted 2 years of they're life exping? No. Should we admire these players
because they were nice to us one day and gave some peice of legend eq. No.
Anyone can do this. Even the most stupid, ignorant player can be a Ginlon
or a Norsu. If you have a lack of personal power in your life, don't come
to MUME expecting to become all powerful and shoving yourself in others
faces. The shoes have already been filled and they are a mighty insecure,
overly-sensitive group.
Bresh2000-12-04 11:05:32
*Sniff* Well Niya u will be missed.
I guess this will be farewell to Hombur to then, bye to u too ?
Had hoped when u where learned to show u some of the wonders of mume
but i know not all ppl are nice. Just like the real world and at times
even worse here.

Vorlin2000-12-04 11:55:16
It's almost impossible to combine maturity and roleplaying with pkilling. In fact, I'll go so far as to say it's almost impossible to combine any positive human virtue at all with pkilling. The core of pkilling is inherently seedy at best: inflicting emotional distress on other people to make yourself feel good. A pkilling mud is basically a collection of people who get off on doing just that. Don't be shocked that they aren't the kind of people that any sane person would want to hang out with.
Meteor2000-12-04 13:22:17
Well Vorlin you commented like people on a PKmud are people who should be in some psychiatrical clynic, but there was no space left or they are so hopeless they are left to kill eachother virtually on the MUD.
*chuckle* there are people willing to rp, just find em. I will miss your cool stories if you stop =(
Diam2000-12-04 13:34:14
Please everyone, read the book of roleplaying, written by Petrel.
Then reconsider, have you actually ever roleplayed in MUME.
I read it and had a good laugh and tears in my eyes.
I am a whore :P, a pure PK person, only getting joy from making another persons
life as miserable as possible or as happy as possible :). I want to be a god.
I am a goddamn cheater:), i abuse anything i see and everything i touch will be corrupted.
When i started MUME, my friend Swash suggested to me that i should play Hobbit thief, but after the thief tickled the snake, i got MAD ! :-]
Then i created the orc warrior and begged the cash for twohander and i smote
the salamander dead in one SMITE!
I had found my race:). I dream about roleplaying, but my nature is war :)
I respect and admire roleplayers as i respect and admire everyone who are
better than me at anything! But i still have hope, because my rl twin brother
is even WORSE CHEATER! :-]

Please read the roleplaying book and enjoy the game, what you still can.
Moria is the best area ever! If you want to enjoy MUME, go read descs in Moria.

My roleplaying character would be the ambassador of Sauron,
the faceless one at the WolfGate from the book, if i remember correctly.
Niya2000-12-04 13:43:12
I agree with Treastin and Shaw's comments about newbies. Many newbies come to MUME wanting to roleplay and have fun and getting to know other likeminded ppl. I have met several new players with my different chars that really wanted to roleplay, but soon found out that noone else did, so they stopped. It's really a pity. As a newbie you don't want to be 'too' different - you just follow what others do. I also agree that it's the players who make the spirit of the game - the management just makes the rules =) I would love to stay and roleplay, trying to change the spirit a bit, but it does not seem to help, at least not as fast as I would like it to, and I do not want to leave MUME every time I've played, feeling annoyed and feeling that it's been a waste of time. Reg. Vorlin's comment - I think you miss out that if you are roleplaying, you kill because you believe either in the good or evil. That is the core of the game. I don't kill because I think it's great that some darkie now needs to go re-equip or to satisfy some sadistic need of mine to feel better than anyone else. I kill because that is the game, because any darkie is the enemy of what is good - and the good must win over the evil. Naive? Perhaps, but that is the game. Of course I also kill to win renown and to level, so that I'll be better to fight for the good of Arda.
To Bresh2000-12-04 13:44:00
I'll miss you too - you are one of those that really lifts the spirit of MUME. And as far as I know, and I have to admit I know pretty well ;), Hombur will still be playing like before. Take care =)
Niya2000-12-04 13:45:24
oh - and that was my comment to Bresh =)
Vorlin2000-12-04 14:22:05
Sure, I stated my position strongly, but anyone who has ever played on a non-pk mud will know what I mean. The difference is like night and day. You win renown on in a non-pk enviroment by your willingness to go the extra mile in helping other people, on a pk mud you win renown by being better than most at inflicting misery on others. :)

Most people who try to rp pkilling end up giving up on it. The problem is, when so many people are so ruthlessly focused on succeeding in pk, anyone who isn't using similar tactics will tend to get trounced on a regular basis. And rp'er or not, that isn't very much fun. So they tend to either convert to hardcore pkilling or move on to something else.

I like mume best for the zones and the skill/combat system. Love the mob and room muddles as well. Could do without the pkilling, don't hate it, just tends to get in my way. Be nice maybe to have two mumes, one for pkilling and one for not, but doubt that would be feasible (for so many reasons it's not even worth itemizing them).
Zim2000-12-04 14:33:25
Well, I agree with you Niya... but it all have a very natural explanation.
Take the NSL lab for example. I dislike them all, I think they are bad
for MUME (as many today are). But then again, is it their fault? According to
me it's not. They were just newbies that got really bad teachers about what
this game is all about. If you teach a dog to bite, it will bite and probably
dont care if it bites a leg of a chair(mume) or a leg made of flesh(character),
this is the IQ that most players of today have. They think they are doing something good by OVERKILLING and that that is what doing good is all about. But as we all have seen lately all the old characters are leaving since the
new characters are biting MUME... i.e making the game a really sad thing
compared to what it could have been... all while they think they are doing
something good... kinda ironic? You can compare these kids with children
being misguided in life... sad... only sad. Without RP this game is TOTALLY
worthless. If you think that overkilling or bash-trapping is cool think
again... or play with children like NSL (children thinking alike have the
most fun no?).
mandorallan2000-12-04 14:40:24
Its players like ariakan, aram and all his other stupid characters that make other people not enjoy themselves. I think he should be site banned permenently
Ariala2000-12-04 14:57:52
just make count of zones and towns in Arda * 2
possible it will help
Fezz2000-12-04 14:59:45
He'll be back
Niya2000-12-04 15:02:10
It's "She'll be back" - and maybe I will =) When roleplay is a part of MUME again, or when I think I could actually help it become a part again.
Loin2000-12-04 15:44:16
Sad to see one leave, who admires the works in Arda so much. I wish I could show you the wonders of the Dwarven Homes, and tell you about the glorious world of mining and work. Most elffolk gets bored soon though, so I will lend you my ear if you might tell me some of those treethings one finds in that nasty world outside. And i shall try not to fall asleep, and maybe even feign some interest in those silly trees. *Bow to ground, sweeping dust with beard etceterae*

Shame to see ppl who actually care about Mume... Was hoping all munchkins would leave now all nice players leave anyway, so nice players could sneak back in...
Guess that'll take a while more. *wave Niya*
Tempest2000-12-04 19:11:23
Zim, I like you alot as a person and when we've grouped together under various names in the past, but please. You for a long time, just as I had with Achilles, became reknowned for leading around mass amounts of followers overkilling everything in sight. You contributed as much to the 'demise' of Mume as anyone. You've changed lately, I have too, and maybe some day NSL will also (but I'm guessing not any time soon :/)
Aragazt2000-12-04 21:42:32
Niya's letter reminds me of that memo from "Jerry Maguire".
At first everyone seems to agree, but...
Trippyhippie2000-12-04 22:41:03
Well, rping is impossible in mume!
I tried to arrange animal fights at the cockfighting grounds in fornost...
1 person came! At first both contestants were killed by kiron, then when i had bought new, he did it again, then he rented...
Then me and Koran both bought a dog and my dog killed his, he refused to pay me the money and killed my dog!
Now, honestly, how many people in lotr would have done that? Most adventurers there were very honourable.
And not many people dare to challenge a bookie in that way!
Now i am going to arrange a boxing fight between two warriors, lets see what happens...
Fergus2000-12-08 01:46:24
I agree that there is too much whining and not enouogh RP but there are plenty
who try to give it a go! When I was a newbie a ranger called Londriel who RP'd
helped me get started then a ranger called Halbarad, another RP, also helped me.
Now most of my characters have alias keys 1 through to 0 with 10 different
aliases reflecting battle cries and in character greetings. I reccommend it to
anyone!! It makes killing even a bear fun when you have elves crying out to
Elbereth and dwarves to Durin, Riders of Rohan urging their mounts on, etc..
Narrate need to be used less for PK and more for newbie helping. Also I urge
people to break stereotypes of character classes. If you want a Radagast type
charming mage: go ahead! Sure he wont be the best PK'er, but if it is fun who
cares??
