Him staying and fighting is just what the nsl wants.  Their basic method on noc/warren raids is to kill the mobs, then pick off anyone who logs in until they get bored and then raid whichever place they aren't currently at.  The only way to stop an nsl raid is to nip it in the bud early, by the time they get to the rent mob it's basically too late short of a miracle.  And yeah, that's a simplification, but live through it a few times and you learn it by heart.
