same slate grey rock of the road. Mountains abound on all sides, and any
entrance further east becomes decidedly tougher. The tower itself seems to be
in disrepair, but all signs also indicate recent occupants. The road continues
to the west and the din of a river relentlessly punishing stone occasionally
drifts from the south. More mountains stretch east, inhospitable as ever.

The Old Forest Road comes to an abrupt end at this large wall of brush. During
the day, it is obvious where the wall ends and the gates begin because the

the Old Forest Road is now a gentle curve. In the east, the road leads to a
small Beorning village. In the north, the road continues for a short time
before turning back to the west.

the bend and widens. This blurs the edge of the road with the beginning of the
path, making it difficult to distinguish one from the other. A large settlement
has grown up where the Old Forest Road ends in the south, protecting itself
within a wall of brush and trees.

The earth has been worn bare by the footfalls of traders between the northern
settlement and the village south of here. The path narrows and bends to the
east. It winds in the erratic fashion most footpaths take. The unusual thing

with domesticated animals. The path also lacks wagon tracks. This must be a
true footpath.

The path eventually heads north-east, but in an indirect way. At times, the
trail turns away from its intended direction, avoiding a rock here, a hole
there. Despite its meandering, the path remains clear and easy to follow.
Countless footfalls have worn away the vegetation and even in darkness it would
be simple to keep on the trail.

At the base of this massive elm tree, it is almost impossible to see the
watchtower directly overhead. Although it is the topmost part of a man-made
structure, it uses the elm as its main support and uses the leaves as its
camouflage. A careless traveller, attempting to sneak up on this village, would
be in for a nasty surprise when passing this lookout point.
