I think the layout of mume.net needs a cosmetic change. I get a 1980 feeling atm.
Others fonts for headings, and an overall page layout redesign would be very much appreciated by me.
If you want to compete with other sites there's need for a simple, yet beautiful, and intuitive layout.

Proposals:
- different colours, grey looks ancient.
- left alignment of pages
- non floating menus and other things, but all integrated in one page.

(good layout imho: www.php.net www.glish.com(last thanks to Aredhel) )

I have to admit that I don't like the layout of neither those pages.

I kept most of the colours and general layout from the old mume.net, but updated them slightly.

Left-aligning the whole site, yes, I was into that in the beginning but many complained.

Using more than 2 fonts, I got many loud cries of abusing the medium doing that, heh. So I've tried to keep the fonts to only a few.

Keep it simple but beautiful.

It's fine as it is!

A few humble suggestions:
Stop the text-input boxes overflowing from the coloured boxes that surround them. I don't know if this is an error or just my browser (Mozilla) fucking up again.
Change the colour for new messages, the bright red is a horrible clash with the blues/greys. Perhaps a pale cyan or mauve.
Make the colours a bit lighter so it's easier on the eyes and warmer and more welcoming. At the moment it looks a bit grim and harsh.
Stop the thing where the name of the first poster in a dicussion is squashed off the right-hand side of the screen.
Perhaps a 'catchup' function to mark all the current posts as read.
Profiles would be nice, but without the annoying pictures.
Allow longer posts.

The things I like:
The simplicity. It's very clean and to the point even if ugly. No huge obnoxious graphics and irritating frames everywhere like a certain site I could mention.
No Vaire-esque iron-fist administration.
Not having to log in.
The archive of logs.
No popularity-contest log-ratings

I'll try to answer everything. :)

Text-box overflow, please send me a message which overflow for you and I'll fix them. (this is basically a font-problem on your system, but I'll fix it from this site).

The bright red for new messages isn't perfect, I'll try to find a better one.

First poster's name being misaligned, this does not happen on my system, I'll look into it.

Catchup. Any time you enter any log/discussion, that object is catched up. I do not have a global catchup sofar. I'll look into it. (hey, sounds standard by now)

Longer posts... you have 1024 characters to play with for now, is that too little? These are comments after all, not essays. What would be a reasonable length?
Mandor 2004-06-03 08:32:35
Err, forgot profiles. Perhaps I could let users scribble a bit about themselves on their bookmark page.
Mandor 2004-06-03 09:27:11
For you with older browsers, I'm working on a different layout, not using CSS at all. You can look at the progress at: http://mume.net/old/
Hanne 2004-06-03 14:33:39
Come on, why would anyone select a browser without support for css? Mandor, please do not encourage conservatives.
Mandor 2004-06-03 14:34:52
I'm afraid some people are forced to use a certain version at their workplace, but I say as you, upgrade, you lazy people!
Amras 2004-06-07 07:44:39
Make an option for us so the page will scroll down to the oldest unread comment!
Mandor 2004-06-07 09:32:39
Good idea. Implemented. Not as an option, but hmm, hard to explain. I'll make a howto where to click some day.

Arh... the RED colour of all "new" is hurting my eyes. Any chance I could perhaps change the colour of "new" things to "green" or "brown" or something less flashy?
Mandor 2004-06-07 18:00:48
Yes, the colour is not perfect. Feel free to suggest better ones (preferably with colour-codes).
Aredhel 2004-06-08 07:22:33
How about this: #fee (pale pink, sort of). #efe and #eef are decent pale green and lilac.
Alantir 2004-07-02 03:14:23
The two links (php and glish) look terrible. Even mume.net's layout is better than those two. Couldn't come up with anything better for examples of good layouts?.. :)

Almost all boxes in this thread are still overflowing for me. Also, in Mandor's comments the boldface stuff somehow runs over the previous word. I guess even old Mozilla is not sufficient for viewing this site, so I stop complaining. Sorry, Mandor.

This site works fine with me! (I'm version 1.2a)
