Hrm, need info on rough staves...if I enchant em and embed crap in 'em do they work like non focied staffs? with just the embedded things doing the work?
Unknown2005-04-12 06:30:09
Yes.
Caejis 2005-04-12 06:57:39
Yes, but you can't have more than one gem, if I remember correctly... Each new one cancels the previous (I won't swear to this, though).

BSC's site has some info on them (or they did the last time I was there several months ago).

The big thing with a rough staff is it's much easier to make than a foci staff, but not nearly as powerful.

However, if you're leveling a caster, they can be a big help when you're a lower level, and always an easy thing to make at higher levels when you rip.

Sogard ya need chant to make it, atleast for gems to work
so ya think bns get chant at level 1? lower level...
watch your words palefazz.

Haelm: Rough staves...stinky little pieces of wood?
Find some puke's nonfocid staff, and you can embed 3 diff
gems/pbshits into it. without having that "next one cancels prev. one!"
thingie.

Rancr waht is your source of info ?
1) i am not sure that the enchant is necessary to get bonus from the embeddings, i _think_ chant just adds some pb and spellsave (and is necessary condition to focus of course), but i may be mistaken on that one
2) I may be msitaken on that one too but i was told (by some generally fiable source) that it is not the staff-type (carved oak vs rough) but the _focusing_ that allowed 2 gems of same time to work together.
So, either you are sure of your assertions, or it would be nice to have someone who is, or someone with identify (and a spare corberyl for the second test, *wink*) to check this out !

I've actually written a guide about BN staves, go read it on the BSC site.

Carved staff with opal and corb, mithril circlet and coppersapphire dipped in starpool! 5+ attack :) and you could probably get decent fights vs bns without pukestaff
Rancr2005-04-13 15:01:11
Shalani, enchant is what allows gems to made their modifiers in staves, you can use 3 gems in carved staff with having em all affect ur casting...i know it i have tested it, i know ppl using it. Somewhy you dont know it, so dont talk about it, i know it thats why i talk it.

and fuck +5 attackspell, 170ob rox
Ninjzor2005-04-13 15:51:52
No real bn needs a staff! They use their swords!! Grrr
Sogard 2005-04-13 18:18:11
I'm not talking about getting a staff at level 1 genius, but rather the few levels before reaching hero. When you can get enchant, even if it is extremly hard to use, one use does the trick and you've then got a nice little staff to help you for the next few levels and/or until you're able to get a branch and make a foci.

It might seem pointless to some to make a rough staff in their mid-high teens, but with the recent change to practices, it wouldn't be hard to decay any extra practices you might put into enchant to get a rough staff a few levels early.
Rancr2005-04-13 18:43:49
Sogard, read the name of this thread? what foci crap you are talkin there...you cant foci rought staves jackass...
Caejis 2005-04-15 05:33:02
Nice little flame, Rancr, even if it was misguided... You need to read through his comment again, though.

Sogard actually made a valid point here :: Use a rough staff+opal+bar for a very basic staff that still works with helping your spells until you are hero. Since branches and willow are not always available, the rough staff would help you out until you can get a branch and a crystal.
The total cost for a rough staff, opal and bar is pretty cheap and it does the trick until you can make the real thing.
Sogard 2005-04-16 20:09:44
I know you can't help it, but try to stop putting words into my mouth Rancr. I never said you can focus a rough staff, I said they're good to use until you can make a foci, and they're much easier to come by.
