what should a newbie caster practice??

You MUST max:

Smite(two-handed) so you can do some damage.
Endurance so you have a lot of hps.
Sneak so you can cast without people seeing you

Get high pracs in:

Charge (it's REALLY cool, as well as overpowered)
Chill touch(It does a lot of damage for little mana, and really fast)
Find the path(helps you find your way around a lot faster)

Finally, some pracs in:

Dodge, so as last unknown said, you can dodge mobs.
Shroud, so you are always invisible.
Poison, so you can poison your enemies and slow them down.
Curse, so you can take away your enemies' ob.

Finally, for a main spell use fireball, it is INSANE against orcs.
